This Excellent, no Outstanding - Resistol - Late 1970s to Early 1980s - BIG HOSS HAT (Open Crown) - Black - perfect size 7-1/4.
We know the tag states 7-1/8 but when this was bought it must have been stretched. Well we know that we did not stretch this one, well we don't think we did? It was such a long long time ago.
We can custom shape this, read below. The paper size tag was folded under the leather sweatband and we just folded back out. We know that many many years ago the hatband that was on this hat was replaced by Dad's HATMAN. He used to do Outstanding work! He Unfortunately no longer can do any of this work anymore.
If you look closely at the pictures you can see how beautifully this was shaped! The front and back brim has that dip and the side brims have a perfect roll. This actually looks taller than the measurements! It's hard to measure the tallest point on the top center of the crown, we measure from the side of the brim where the bow is to the tallest point, we do the best that we are able to do. So it maybe off by a fraction (to low) off but it's pretty darn close! That 6.5 inch tall crown and the 4.25 inches wide brim. The overall length of this hat is over 16 inches! You can see why shipping is more expensive!
That Resistol hat box in the picture was way to small to fit the hat inside, Dad just wanted it in the picture. SO THERE IS NO HAT BOX INCLUDED IN THIS SALE! We tried other older Resistol hat boxes but this hat is just toolarge to fit inside any of them! Read dimensions below! Over 19 inches long.
Have you ever watched the TV series “BONANZA”? That series has an actor Dan Blocker, who played “Hoss Cartwright in the show. This was shaped into the Tall Open Crown “HOSS HAT”, that he wore.
So the pictures of the “Hand Bashed” shapes are what it will look like f you want to do your own Hand Bashing. This 4X Beaver was manufactured long before they hat nowadays are made, so it still semi-pliable, allowing for this Hand Bashing. We think it's going to really look much much better to steam the shape into the hat! Just much cleaner and crisper lines then.
This was steam shaped by Dad and Grandson. First into an Open Crown which looked outstanding but both Dad and Grandson believes it's just so beautifully shaped like this is currently shaped they decided to leave it this shape but could easily be steam reshaped into that Gus - Tom Mix style or the Tallest Cattleman cowboy hat. After you buy the hat and you'd like it shaped into one of those shapes just please write to us and we will get that done. After it is completed we will send you pictures for your approval. If you decide on a custom shaping it will take a couple of days to get that done! Dad is EXTREMELY particular about shaping hats! And this would be NO exception! So it will take time to get it as perfectly custom shaped!
That brim has been shaped into the “Shovel” style brim. It just looks perfect to us!
Big Gus - Tom Mix - Color is the Black. The picture of the whole underside is the best picture reflecting the actual color of this hat. It is the same color all over the hat! We don't know why our pictures do not come out consistently black? If anyone out there can help with some tips please write to us.
Dad does have a couple of Real Horsehair hatbands that you might want to add? These are all made from Real Horsehair! They are NEW and range from $70 to $94.
We could not find a Resistol hat box large enough that this Big Cowboy hat will fit in, so there is no hat box. This will be very carefully packed and shipped! We will NOT squeeze any hat into a small shipping box after all the work it takes to get it so perfectly shaped!
After saying that this will require a Medium to LARGE shipping box so it costs more to ship than any of our hat.
This is another of son's OUTSTANDING Vintage early 1980s Resistol Cowboy hats. The Resistol model Quicksilver was manufactured from a 4X Beaver. Since this is a vintage Beaver it's very very soft to the touch and it is somewhat pliable (not like the 1950s Stetson hats) enough to steam shape this into any style! It will hold any shape that's steamed into this great hat! There is just NO comparison to any of the newer hats that are sold today! The newer Resistol hats are very stiff and not really pliable at all! There is just NO way to compare this to anything new!
We filled the picture gallery so you can see every detail on this great hat! We just can't find anything really wrong with it! We know that this was worn a few times and then just stored away. Ok now the particulars
The size tag states 7-1/8 and this measures to a PERFECT 7-1/4 at 22-3/4 inches. We think that this was stretched at some point? But we did not do that so we are not 100% certain that it was?
We use the Tilley Hat Sizing chart for sizes, that came in the 1970s when the Tilley Hat Sizing Chart was developed.
And like always we measure each hat 3 times using different methods to verify the actual size!

That feather is still in very good condition, it has that tiny metal thing on the end of it which makes it easy to slide in and out. We think this also came from Dad's HATMAN?

NOTE: when we ship Dad's hats out we use strong shipping boxes and each hat we ship is FULLY INSURED and we are no longer going to handle broken box insurance claims. We discovered that one buyer crushed their shipping box and asked for a hefty partial refund. The shipper sent us a picture of the box sitting at the front door and it was NOT CRUSHED? We also discovered that because we were NOT in possession of the box it was impossible for us to file the claim. So now and in the future all claims will be handled by the buyer of the hat or item we ship. Again we ALWAYS carefully pack each hat so it will not be crushed in a good strong shipping box.
