A first edition of this very scarce biography of Sir Thomas Bernard, third Baronet.

In this interesting biography, James Baker offers an outline of the Life of English social reformer Sir Thomas Bernard.

Having married a rich wife, Bernard devoted his time to social projects, working as a treasurer for the Foundling Hospital for abandoned babies in 1795-1806, and establishing the Society for Bettering the Condition and Increasing the Comforts of the Poor. As well as promoting vaccination, improving the conditions of child labour, and advocating allotments, he was a leading proponent of Regents Canal in London.


CONDITION

In a contemporary full calf binding. Externally, lovely. The front hinge is just beginning to crack near the tail of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Aside from the frontispiece which is lightly foxed, pages are bright and clean throughout.
